VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Circle Craft, an artist-run cooperative dedicated to promoting craft in British Columbia, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Since its inception in 1973 in Victoria, Circle Craft has been a beacon for craftspeople. It was officially incorporated as an artist-owned co-op in 1974. By 1977, the organization had established its headquarters in Vancouver, finding its permanent home on Granville Island in 1984. Now, fifty years on, Circle Craft remains steadfast in its mission, offering a vibrant platform for members to showcase their artistry, fostering growth among artisans, and serving as a hub for connection and inspiration throughout the artistic community of British Columbia.
“The 50th anniversary of Circle Craft marks a special milestone for us all in the community,” said Tanya Droege, President of Circle Craft. “Over the years, we’ve established a strong network of artists and craftspeople, and this event is a wonderful opportunity to honour our history while looking towards the future.”
To celebrate the last five decades together, Circle Craft is hosting a free event on September 13 at the Net Loft Common Area. Attendees will be able to shop members’ work and enjoy snacks provided by local food vendor, L’Epicerie Rotisserie & Gourmet Shop. An impressive collection of generously donated artworks will be auctioned leading up to the event, featuring works by Diane Paterson, Ron Bazar and Greg Kawczynski. A portion of the silent auction proceeds will go towards a five-year scholarship with Emily Carr University, providing scholarships to foster the next generation of artists.
“For the past five decades, our core mission has remained unchanged,” continued Tanya. “We are dedicated to supporting younger generations and empowering them with the necessary tools and resources to build successful art businesses.”
Circle Craft offers workshops to educate its members on crucial business practices such as tax filing and social media training, preparing artists for success in their entrepreneurial pursuits. Circle Craft’s members collectively generated $1.3 million in annual sales.
“Circle Craft is an extremely valuable organization,” said Gordon Hutchens, a long-standing co-op member. “Craftspeople need a supportive community, and Circle Craft has always been that for me. Through the co-op, I became a self-sustaining artist and supported my family by doing what I love—pottery.”
