UC Scout Introduces New Ethnic Studies and AP African American Studies Courses to Support California’s Educational Mandates

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--()--UC Scout, a University of California (UC) online student academic preparation program, today announced the launch of two new courses: Introduction to Ethnic Studies and AP African American Studies, aimed to prepare California high school students to meet upcoming graduation requirements and to foster a deeper understanding of diverse cultural histories and contributions.

The graduating class of 2030 will be the first class among California high school students required to pass an ethnic studies course to graduate under Assembly Bill 101. To assist schools and educators seeking access to ethnic studies curricula, UC Scout developed Introduction to Ethnic Studies, a course aligned with California’s model curriculum that meets the A-G requirements under area G for UC and CSU admissions. This single-semester introductory course explores the rich cultural experiences and academic contributions of African American, Asian American, Chicanx/Latinx, and Native American groups in the United States, providing students with opportunities for social awareness and activism within their local communities.

Additionally, UC Scout is proud to offer AP African American Studies, the first-ever Advanced Placement course dedicated to Black history. The interdisciplinary course explores an array of topics from ancient African kingdoms to modern social justice movements and themes of migration, resistance and resilience. The extensive course material allows students to prepare for the AP exam and gain an understanding of African American culture and history. The course is aligned with the College Board’s framework and is designed to meet the educational needs of California’s diverse student population.

"These new courses underscore UC Scout’s commitment to providing high-quality, accessible educational resources that meet the needs of California’s students and educators," said Ehren Koepf, Executive Director at UC Scout. "Ensuring schools have access to relevant resources and materials to meet their educators' and students' needs are critical, whether that is access to curricula to expand their course offerings, meet upcoming new requirements like ethnic studies, provide essential resources for teachers, or offer students a chance for advancement or remediation."

Both courses are available at no cost to California public school teachers and students through UC Scout’s Plus plan, supporting in-person, hybrid, and fully online teaching environments. Educators and schools are encouraged to use this curricula to ensure students are well-prepared for graduation and beyond.
