LOS ALAMOS, N.M.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Spiritus, the climate tech company designing innovative solutions for scalable direct-air-capture (DAC) of carbon dioxide, announced today that it has hired James Burbridge as its Director of Business Development. Burbridge brings extensive experience in carbon markets. Prior to joining Spiritus, he served as Director of North America Advisory at Carbon Direct, where he advised clients topping the Fortune 500 on high-quality carbon reduction and removal solutions and helped them develop strategies around emissions, reductions, and removals.
"James' deep knowledge of carbon markets and experience developing impactful carbon removal initiatives for the world’s biggest companies make him an ideal addition to our team as we work to scale our novel direct air capture technology," said Charles Cadieu, co-founder and CEO of Spiritus. "His insights will be invaluable as we engage with key stakeholders and partners to drive adoption of our cost-effective carbon removal solution and pursue our mission of making large-scale carbon removal a reality in the fight against climate change."
Spiritus has developed a unique direct air capture system utilizing a proprietary sorbent material they call ‘fruit’ that passively adsorbs CO2 from the air at a fraction of the cost of current sorbents. The fruit is placed in ‘trees' that make up a Carbon Orchard, with a centralized desorption system that extracts the captured CO2 before returning the fruit to the trees to restart the cycle. This modular, passive air contact approach greatly reduces energy requirements compared to fan-based DAC systems.
"Climate change is the greatest problem the world is faced with, and the only path forward is through innovation," said James Burbridge. "We need new approaches like those that Spiritus is pioneering if we hope to reverse the damage done. Spiritus' novel approach to DAC could solve the major cost and energy challenges that face the industry today, potentially paving the way for widespread adoption of DAC solutions. I look forward to leveraging my experience to expand access to affordable, permanent carbon removal through strategic partnerships and business development initiatives as we scale this critical climate solution."
Prior to Carbon Direct, Burbridge worked at the XPRIZE Foundation, where he designed and pitched the Musk Foundation-funded $100M XPRIZE for Carbon Removal (which named Spiritus a Top 100 team in competition earlier this year) and the OPIS Carbon Market Report, which he helped launch. He previously worked as an energy markets journalist in China and Singapore. Burbridge holds an MBA from Rotterdam School of Management and a BA in English from the University of Kansas.
