AMWA Brings Voices From the Silenced: Pre-Roe Abortion Stories to the Screen

CHICAGO--()--The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) proudly supports Voices from the Silenced, a compelling tribute to the resilience of women, by playwrights Victoria Rue and Martha Boesing, in collaboration with Luna Productions. This film brings to light the personal stories of women who had abortions before the Roe v. Wade ruling.

This film is especially timely as the national debate on reproductive rights intensifies on the 2-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, which has significantly restricted access to abortion in many states.

Voices from the Silenced is a groundbreaking play-to-film documentary offering a deeply human portrayal of women who faced the dangers of illegal abortions and societal stigma. Rue and Boesing expertly combine drama and documentary elements to create a powerful call for reflection and dialogue on the ongoing fight for reproductive rights.

“Through Voices from the Silenced, we aim to honor the women whose stories have been overlooked for too long. By amplifying their voices, we hope to ignite empathy, understanding, and action in the ongoing fight for reproductive rights,” said Victoria Rue, film co-writer and director.

Martha Boesing, co-writer/co-director, added, “Voices from the Silenced is a testament to the power of storytelling in effecting social change. By confronting the harsh realities of the past, we address the challenges of the present and future. This film is not just a reflection of history but a call-to-action for a more just and equitable society.”

“This film is not just a recounting of history but a stark warning of what’s at stake. It underscores the urgent need to protect reproductive rights and serves as a rallying cry for those who believe in women's autonomy and dignity. We must not let history repeat itself,” said Susan Hingle, MD, AMWA President.

Voices from the Silenced is set to captivate audiences with its storytelling, visual imagery, and profound relevance to the current state of reproductive rights and the ongoing fight for access to comprehensive reproductive care.
