TAQA's Drilling Dysfunctions Mitigation Technology Surpasses 10,000-Run Milestone

Deployed in wells globally, TAQA’s Thruster provides smooth energy transfer to the bit; protecting downhole components and reducing downtime

EDMONTON, Alberta--()--Industrialization & Energy Services Company TAQA, a leading well solutions provider in the energy industry, today announced that Thruster™, its innovative technology designed to revolutionize drilling operations by effectively managing weight on bit and reducing downhole dysfunctions, has recently surpassed the milestone of 10,000 runs with an average savings of $80,000 per day of rig time eliminated.

As more complex wells are being drilled with more sophisticated bottom hole assemblies (BHA), downhole shock and vibration are having a significant impact on drilling operational costs and time. While many downhole tools have been developed to mitigate different vibration modes, Thruster is designed to revolutionize drilling operations by effectively managing weight on bit and differential pressure while eliminating the noted dysfunctions. It maintains constant bit engagement, consistent parameters, and reduces the impact of non-uniform motions in the drill string, ultimately enhancing drilling efficiency and minimizing the risk of damage to downhole components.

Deployed across North America, The Middle East and beyond, Thruster has helped global E&P companies over the past decade significantly reduce the number of trips out of hole and days drilling, achieving a minimum estimate of aggregated savings of > 1 billion USD or an average savings of $80,000 per day of rig time saved.

"For TAQA Drilling Solutions, this milestone represents success in our efforts in North America over the last decade and the global expansion with the technology over the last few years,” said Robert Hemminger, TAQA’s Vice President – Sales, Marketing & Technology. “10,000 runs in 9 countries are not without a coordinated effort from our global sales and operations teams, which are some of the best in the industry."

A major operator in Sinai, Egypt, experienced significant issues with high axial and lateral vibrations while drilling a deep 8.5” vertical well, which led to inability to increase weight on bit (WOB) and ultimately, low rate of penetration (ROP). A rotary BHA with a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit was being utilized. In response, TAQA recommended adding the 6.75” Thruster as close to the bit as possible to mitigate bit bounce and other dysfunctions. After seeing the improvement when adding the Thruster, a second Thruster was added higher in the BHA. Adding 1 Thruster resulted in a footage increase of 14.8%, ROP increase of 36.2% and bit bounce was mitigated. Adding a second Thruster resulted in a footage increase of 37.7%, ROP increase of 37.5% and vibration was minimalized. Overall, Thruster implementation saved the operator an estimated cost of $122K per day. Read the full case study here.
