With Expanded Footprint, Shangri-La Becomes One of Largest Cannabis Multistate Operators in US

Shangri-La’s rapid expansion includes 19 dispensary licenses, four manufacturing licenses, and two cultivation licenses in Missouri, Ohio, Illinois, and Connecticut

COLUMBIA, Mo.--()--Shangri-La Dispensaries, a vertically integrated cannabis company with significant dispensary, manufacturing and cultivation operations nationally, celebrated today that its recent Northeast expansion qualifies it as one of the most geographically diverse multistate operators in the United States.

"In less than five years, we've grown from one dispensary in Missouri to retail, manufacturing, and cultivation operations across four states," Shangri-La founder and chief executive officer Nevil Patel said. "Becoming one of the respected licensed MSOs in the nation is an enormous achievement and testament to our thoughtful approach to navigating the complex legal, regulatory, and reparative justice aspects of this business."

Founded in Missouri in 2019, the privately held and minority-owned Shangri-La has quickly grown its legal commercial footprint to four states: Missouri, Ohio, Illinois, and Connecticut, with plans to expand further. According to public industry data, the company's April 2024 expansion into Connecticut gives it the 12th-most state licenses in the country (April, 2024, MJBizDaily.com).

"Shangri-La's ambitious growth strategy has quickly catapulted the company in league with listed and extremely well-financed competitors. We're excited to expand even further," added Dr. Kepal Patel, co-owner and president of Shangri-La.

Shangri-La Dispensaries is planning additional Connecticut locations in East Hartford, Plainville, Waterbury, and a second location in Norwalk, a cultivation and manufacturing production facility in Stratford, and a separate manufacturing production facility that is expected to supply products to its dispensaries and other dispensaries in Connecticut.

Shangri-La management continues to evaluate opportunities to invest in other states as cannabis becomes more widely accepted at the state and federal levels. This trend was recently highlighted with the DEA’s announcement that it would finally reclassify cannabis as a Schedule 1 substance to a Schedule 3 substance. The company has pending dispensary license applications in Alabama, Texas, and Illinois, while evaluating opportunities in Florida, Maryland, and other states.
