FRANKLIN, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Community Health Systems, Inc. (NYSE: CYH) (CHS) announced today that, in honor of Doctors’ Day, its affiliated hospitals will donate more than $250,000 to charitable organizations that are addressing social determinants of health. This is the second consecutive year that CHS-affiliated hospitals have marked Doctors’ Day with donations to local causes that combat food insecurity, homelessness, educational barriers and economic instability.
Doctors’ Day is an annual observance that honors physicians worldwide for their unwavering commitment to providing high-quality healthcare for individuals and communities.
“Donations that will help improve the quality of life for vulnerable people in every community we serve is our way of showing gratitude for all of the physicians who work across our organization and for what they do every day to help people get well and live healthier,” said Tim L. Hingtgen, Chief Executive Officer of Community Health Systems, Inc.
CHS also has completed its second annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive, an enterprise-wide initiative to fight hunger. Peanut butter, known for its nutritional value and long shelf life, is among the most requested items by food banks. CHS-affiliated health systems collected more than 86,000 jars of peanut butter and other nut butters to donate to 58 local food banks.
A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found hunger rose sharply in 2022, with more than 44 million people, including 13 million children, living in households that sometimes struggled to put food on the table.
“Hunger can have a devastating impact on overall health and wellbeing, especially for children. We applaud community food banks for their work to fight hunger, alleviate suffering, and support families in their time of need. We’re also extremely grateful for the generosity of employees, physicians and community members who joined in our efforts to create greater health equity by supporting our Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive this year,” said Hingtgen.
