INTIMINA Calls For Closing the Global Gender Health Gap

The health of at least half of the global population is often overlooked. Efforts to close the gender gap are stalling and will take an additional 131 years to reach parity.

NEW YORK--()--INTIMINA, intimate wellbeing brand and advocate for women's health and wellness, is calling attention to the persistent gender health gap that affects at least half of the global population through their new report, in collaboration with Sarah Graham (author of Rebel Bodies), A World Without The Gender Health Gap. Despite significant advancements in healthcare, an alarming disparity persists, with women's health often overlooked, leading to detrimental consequences on both an individual and societal level.

Prevention and intervention for women’s health issues has historically been less of a focus. The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap score in 2023 for all 146 countries included within their report stands at 68.4% closed. The slow progress in this area is specifically due to the deficiency of funding and, subsequently, a scarcity of clinical research and data on women’s health issues.

A World Without The Gender Health Gap predicts how the country could look for women if the gender health gap didn’t exist – from health, sex and relationships to careers and the economy. Women often face higher healthcare expenses throughout their lives, leading to financial strain and limited access to essential medical services. The UK economy would stand to save £18 billion a year without a gender health gap; and in the US, working women in the States are estimated to pay $15 billion more each year on healthcare costs than working men.

"The gender health gap has far-reaching effects on every aspect of women’s lives, from sex and relationships to their mental health and careers. But beyond this, it impacts wider society and the economy," remarked Sarah Graham, journalist and author. "INTIMINA’s report shows what life could be like if the gender health gap didn’t exist, and how this would impact not just women’s lives, but the lives of everyone.”

From reproductive health to chronic diseases, women encounter unique health challenges that require specialized attention. According to INTIMINA’s report, if women’s reproductive conditions were treated with the same gravity as men’s, diagnosis times for conditions - such as endometriosis, a condition that is notoriously misdiagnosed, or diagnosed too late - would be reduced substantially. INTIMINA stresses the importance of increasing awareness and advocating for policies that prioritize gender-specific healthcare needs.

The brand is now calling on healthcare providers, government bodies, educators, companies and brands to commit to an 8-point plan to close the gap by 2035. By working together, society can strive towards a future where every individual, regardless of gender, has equal access to comprehensive and inclusive healthcare services.
