Solidia® Completes First Production Campaign of Low-Carbon Cement With CTS, Leading Specialty Cement Producer

One of multiple production runs with cement manufacturers around the world, the campaign further demonstrates commercial viability for Solidia Cement™.

SAN ANTONIO--()--CTS Cement Manufacturing Corporation (CTS), a leading specialty cement producer known for sustainable innovations such as Rapid Set® and Komponent®, recently completed a production campaign of Solidia Cement™, a low-carbon cement patented and commercialized by Solidia Technologies, and is planning future campaigns. As one of multiple production runs completed at cement sites in several countries, the CTS campaign in North America further demonstrates the viability and scalability for this groundbreaking technology that dramatically reduces the carbon footprint of cement, concrete, and the building industry as a whole.

“CTS strives to be at the forefront of innovative, sustainable cement technologies that are engineered for performance and high quality, and we’re thrilled to play a key role in helping to bring Solidia’s low-carbon cement to widespread commercial availability,” said Ken Vallens, President and CEO of CTS. “Our first production campaign with Solidia Cement was a tremendous success and demonstrated the true potential for this important technology, and we are looking forward to working with Solidia on additional production runs in the near future.”

Solidia Cement is a low-limestone cement that gains strength through carbonation — exposure to CO2 — rather than hydration like traditional portland cement. Solidia Cement is made using the same raw materials and equipment as portland cement; however, Solidia Cement achieves significant CO2 reductions from lower production temperatures and reduced limestone calcination. This translates to 30% lower CO2 emissions and a 12% greater yield per ton of raw material, compared to traditional portland cement.

“As the largest manufacturer of advanced low-carbon belitic calcium sulphoaluminate (BCSA) cement and Type-K shrinkage-compensating cement in North America and with a proven track record of producing innovative and high-quality materials, CTS is an ideal partner,” said Solidia CEO Russell Hill, Ph.D. “The company’s production campaigns not only showcase the commercial feasibility of Solidia Cement, but they also expand our network for production. We’re excited to continue to work with them to supply growing demand for Solidia’s precast and supplementary cementitious material platforms with Solidia Cement.”
