About Gary Locke
Gary Locke’s illustrious career as a senior statesman and diplomat spans four decades. He was first elected to the Washington House of Representatives in 1982, where he served until 1994.
As the Governor of Washington State from 1997 to 2005, Mr. Locke was the first Chinese-American governor as well as the first Asian-American governor in the continental U.S. Mr. Locke fostered a robust trade relationship between the state and many trading partners, including China. His administration actively supported international companies looking to invest in the U.S.
Mr. Locke served as Secretary of Commerce from 2009 to 2011, when he made history by launching the innovative “SelectUSA” program. The program facilitated foreign direct investment (FDI) in the U.S., playing a significant role in stimulating the U.S. economy and creating jobs. From 2011 to 2014, Mr. Locke served as the United States Ambassador to China as the first Chinese American in the role. He used his position to promote bilateral cooperation and understanding between the two countries.
