GREENWICH, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Breast Cancer Alliance, a private breast cancer foundation, has provided $1.5 million in grants during its fiscal year ending March 31, 2023. The grants were awarded to 27 recipients in four areas supporting research, early detection, education and support for survivors.
Since the organization’s inception in 1996, it has awarded almost 500 grants totaling more than $33 million toward breast cancer research, support and education.
“We are so proud to have become one of the most prominent, private non-corporate breast cancer organizations in the country, and continue to make a substantial and meaningful impact on the fight against breast cancer,” said Yonni Wattenmaker, Executive Director of Breast Cancer Alliance.
Justin Nelson, a J.P. Morgan executive who serves as the organization’s treasurer, added that “the grants awarded by Breast Cancer Alliance have resulted in significant strides forward in each of our respective areas of focus.”
Grants are given in the following areas:
Young Investigator: Providing researchers at an early stage in their research career with the seed funding required to get the groundwork in place for larger, longer-term grants, often with the National Institutes of Health or Department of Defense.
Exceptional Projects: Recognizing creative, unique and innovative research. Awardees are generally clinical doctors and tenured research scientists at institutions throughout the country with record of past success.
Breast Surgery Fellowships: Funding for fellowships is available to Society of Surgical Oncology-accredited institutions located in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut aimed at encouraging more surgeons to become specialists in the field of breast cancer.
Education & Outreach: Supporting programs directly related to outreach and breast cancer case management services, including education, counseling and screening in an effort to remove barriers of access to care for the uninsured/underserved. Programs must be located in Connecticut and/or Westchester County, New York.
