Hospital IQ Releases 2022 Market Report on the State of Healthcare Operations

A new survey reveals priorities for 111 health system executives include finding solutions for capacity, workforce, and growth in a post-pandemic era

NEWTON, Mass.--()--Hospital IQ, a leading intelligent workflow automation provider for health system operations, released the key findings of their 2022 State of Healthcare Operations market report today.

The report identifies the top priorities, challenges, and concerns leaders within top health systems are experiencing across the U.S. Based on key findings from the 111 hospital and health system executive respondents surveyed, most healthcare executives’ priorities center around boosting capacity and growth, streamlining patient throughput, and addressing staffing concerns:

  • With nurse staffing shortages, the ability to align staff to patient demand is an ever-present concern. 70% of healthcare leaders find the ability to identify and adjust for staffing overages and shortages to be challenging.
  • Optimizing capacity is one of the most substantial concerns among healthcare executives. Yet, 61% of health systems struggle to forecast department-level capacity. Executives are especially concerned with capacity issues stemming from suboptimal patient flow, workforce alignment, and OR utilization.
  • There is a recognized dilemma among executives looking to leverage existing technology investments to manage capacity. 81% of hospitals and health systems must contend with data silos and disparate systems. Many organizations still primarily rely on their EMR platforms by leveraging their solutions’ functionalities; however, reporting and real-time data are persistent pain points.

Today, the spotlight on the interconnected nature of hospital operations is larger than ever. To manage these complex facets of operations, hospital leaders are looking towards advanced technological solutions that take a multi-pronged approach to the challenges of physical capacity, patient throughput, and frontline staffing. Digital innovation makes data-driven operations more feasible, enabling health systems to proactively align actions, priorities, and resources across the enterprise and achieve unified capacity optimization.

“This report highlights challenges that have been plaguing health systems for quite some time, further exacerbated by the pandemic,” says Jason Harber, COO and Chief Strategy Officer of Hospital IQ. “Over the next several years, health system leaders’ top priorities will be increasing surgical volume, optimizing OR utilization (including staffing and schedules), reducing patients’ length of stay, and streamlining discharge activities. Our platform helps hospitals and health systems address these issues through a combination of capabilities known as intelligent automation. The result is a new level of peak operational performance that’s consistently sustained over time.”

Hospital IQ commissioned the survey with Sage Growth Partners and conducted qualitative market interviews with senior-level hospital executives along with quantitative survey responses from 111 hospital and health system leaders. The survey was conducted in January 2022.
