Mobile phone numbers now rival Social Security and driver’s license numbers as the personal identifier that consumers use to register for financial services. That’s why mobile phone numbers are now the data of choice for account takeovers and other identity theft. Fraudsters use social engineering to obtain a consumer’s phone number and port it to their device at a new service provider. That can then give them access to that consumer’s bank accounts, bitcoin, payment services and more by having login passwords sent to the newly ported phone number. By the time the consumer or their financial institution find out, the fraudsters may have taken over access to the accounts. |

In the “Fighting the Rise of Financial Crime” panel discussion, iconectiv telecom fraud expert George Cray will explore how Trusted Communications Superheroes at banks and other financial services firms are fighting back — proactively. Armed with an authoritative, continually updated repository of telephone number porting information, Trusted Communications Fraud Fighter superheroes now can instantly check who the current telecom service provider is and determine whether a number has recently been ported or a SIM has changed. If it has, a one-time passcode would not be sent to the phone, and customer service agents can take additional steps to validate the person’s identity. |
