LIVINGSTON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TeenVestor.com, the only investment educational website for teens and parents, today announced the publication of a report on the goals and attitudes of teen investors.
The report is based on a survey of 160 aspiring and actual teen investors (ages 13-18) who took a comprehensive 9-hour online stock investment course.
Among the findings in the report are that teen investors:
- Lacked interest in ESG investing: the teen respondents ranked the ESG educational module as the least useful topic in their investing journey among 17 educational modules.
- Are not primarily motivated by making money in stocks: only 17% of the respondents were interested in stocks to make “easy” money; 64% of the respondents just wanted basic stock investing knowledge and to build long-term investment habits.
“This is the first study to reveal what motivates real teen investors and what topics resonate with them. The study provides a template on how to make stock investing appealing to teenagers,” says Andrea Walker, co-author of TeenVestor®: The Practical Investment Guide for Teens and their Parents.
The elimination of stock trading fees, reduction in minimum investment balances, and introduction of fractional shares by online brokers have fueled the surge of teenage investors over the past few years.
This boom in teen investing has been flagged by some as potentially dangerous unless the young investors understand the risks of playing in the stock market.
“In order to help teenagers invest responsibly, it’s important to know what investing topics to teach them, what to avoid, and what drives them to stock investing in the first place,” says Nkem Modu, lead instructor for the TeenVestor Stock Certification Course.
About the Methodology
The report covers a voluntary questionnaire taken by 160 teenagers ages 13 to 18 year-olds who paid for an online course, the TeenVestor Stock Certification Course, for aspiring and actual teen investors. The course consisted of 17 educational modules completed in about 9 hours. The respondents took the course between Jan. 1, 2021 to Dec. 31, 2021.
