Entrepreneur’s Donation Funds O.C. Students’ STEM Education

COSTA MESA, Calif.--()--Students at California Elementary School in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) will benefit from a local entrepreneur who is funding a special software specifically designed to improve student learning.

Plump Engineering CEO Richard Plump’s $5,000 donation will help purchase licenses to use Freckle, a software program that helps students in all core subjects. Plump is especially passionate about the future of children’s skills relative to science, technology, engineering, and math – a popular acronym dubbed STEM.

The founder of Anaheim-based Plump Engineering, Inc. will present the $5,000 check to California Elementary School Principal Ryan Longacre and students during the school’s upcoming Spirit Ceremony slated for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday December 15th.

The Freckle program is designed for first through sixth grade students, allowing them to learn at an individual and independent pace. As students often have unique styles of learning, the program continuously adapts and provides content geared to the individual.

“The Freckle software is a tool that allows us to offer kids meaningful math experiences,” says Longacre. “In a classroom of thirty-two kids, it can be challenging to reach each individual student. All of them have varied learning styles and skill levels.”

For Plump, Math is a primary concern.

“Math is a universal language that we use every day, whether balancing a check book or engineering a new building,” says Plump. “Everyone should know the basic concepts of math.”

Plump says he knows first-hand that young people often need help securing a solid education. A self-described ‘late bloomer’ who maintained marginal grades early in his school career, he had to attend a junior college prior to earning admittance to a university.

“I blossomed late in life and now I employ 70 people,” he says. “I recognize the value of education and want the children to have this opportunity early in their life.”

In addition to the shuttle transfer, PEI was involved with transporting the massive Los Angeles County Museum of Art rock and large heavy equipment to the port of Long Beach and San Onofre nuclear power plant.
