Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics Begins Leader Search for State’s Leading Public and STEM High School

New Leader Will Expand on School’s Efforts to Increase Oklahoma’s National Education Ranking

OKLAHOMA CITY--()--The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) announced today it has begun its active search for the school’s next president. The national search for the school’s third president in its 30-year history is headed by OSSM alumni Geoffrey Simpson of Tulsa, Okla. Additional members of the committee include Dan Little, chairman of the OSSM Board of Trustees; Ann Hargis, former first lady of Oklahoma State University and community volunteer; and Teresa Dietrich, chief product and technology officer at Stack Overflow and member of the OSSM Class of 1995 and others.

“OSSM has always been the education leader in Oklahoma. We thank Dr. Wang for his dedicated service, which has positioned OSSM well. As we look to the future, we seek a dynamic leader who can continue to carry the school into a new era and engage with the state legislature, the people of Oklahoma, and the OSSM family to ensure its continued success,” said Simpson. “We will continue to pursue our efforts to attract the best talent from both within and outside of the state. Two thousand twenty-two will be a year of change and celebration for OSSM.”

Current president, Frank Wang, Ph.D., announced his retirement in June. Appointed in 2012, he will step down at the end of the current school year in June 2022. During his tenure, Dr. Wang increased contributions to the OSSM Foundation Faculty Endowment to $10 million from $4.2 million. This fund was established to achieve long-term stability and to ensure the recruitment and retention of the exceptional caliber of faculty it has employed since opening. OSSM is the 2022 Best Public High School and Best STEM School in Oklahoma as named by Niche, a leading ranking organization. It is also ranked #20 out of 19,984 high schools in the nation. This is the third consecutive year OSSM as named as the state’s leading high school.

Nationally ranked as a top public high school in the United States, OSSM provides a college-level curriculum in science and mathematics to juniors and seniors. Created through legislative action in 1983, the two-year residential public high school serves all schools and students through math contests, student workshops and summer academies, teacher professional development, and outreach activities for students of varying ages.

In addition to its residential program, OSSM has five regional locations as well as a virtual program, through which students participate in rigorous academics while maintaining their local high school affiliation.
