TORONTO--()--CanadaHelps, the country's largest platform for donating and fundraising online, is calling on Canadians to unite in the spirit of giving today for GivingTuesday. Coinciding with the start of the holiday season, GivingTuesday is one of the most important days of the year for Canadian charities. This year, more than half of Canadian charities report that their operations are at risk due to an increase in demand for their services that far exceeds their capacity to deliver; 70% of charities expect demand will continue to grow.1 As the pandemic has hit vulnerable communities particularly hard, Canadians are asked to give generously on GivingTuesday in support of the causes close to their heart to help charities survive and respond to increased need. To amplify giving, CanadaHelps is boosting donations made on GivingTuesday by $2.*

“Charities play a critical role in Canadian society, filling gaps in service delivery but also driving innovative new ways of tackling our biggest issues. Millions of people rely on and benefit from the services they provide – from poverty reduction and animal rescues to health care, education, and disability support services, there is so much essential work done by charities,” said Marina Glogovac, President and CEO of CanadaHelps. “Most of the charities in Canada are small and they rely heavily on donations to do their work. If we let these charities fail, we all fail. Today, we call on Canadians to generously support the charities and causes that are at risk and so important to our communities and everyday lives.”

Ways to get involved in GivingTuesday

Making a GivingTuesday donation to one of Canada’s 86,000 registered charities is easy through CanadaHelps.org. As Canada’s trusted online destination for giving and fundraising, CanadaHelps makes it easy to browse by charitable category so people across the country can discover and support charities of interest to them. CanadaHelps provides the flexibility for Canadians to make a single or monthly donation, fundraise on behalf of a charity, send a Charity Gift Card, send an eCard as a tribute for a donation made in memory or in honour of someone, or donate to a Cause Fund.

A challenge to surpass last year’s GivingTuesday results

2020 was a record-setting year for GivingTuesday in Canada. More than $11 million was donated to charities across the country using CanadaHelps – up 122% from GivingTuesday in 2019. More than 9,300 charities received donations from more than 77,600 donations (up 112% from 2019), contributed by more than 47,500 people who donated using CanadaHelps (more than double the number from 2019). In a video appeal, Glogovac calls on Canadians to donate to their favourite charities.

About GivingTuesday

GivingTuesday unlocks generosity around the world to bring about real change in communities. GivingTuesday follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and it is about much more than just fundraising. It’s about giving in whatever ways we can, which can include volunteering, donating blood, donating food or clothing, spreading the word, or giving a financial donation. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners – charities, community movements, small businesses and large corporations, as well as families and individuals – to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. Across Canada and in 80 countries around the world, GivingTuesday unites communities by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another. GivingTuesday Canada is co-founded by CanadaHelps and GIV3, and is supported by the Rideau Hall Foundation. For more information visit GivingTuesday.ca.
