Certificate Course Is Geared Toward Aspiring Professional Writers in Media, Advertising, and More
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Yellowbrick, in collaboration with The New School, and Rolling Stone, today announced the launch of Media Writing Essentials, an online course that provides a unique and practical take on writing as a profession in today's media world. Through this course, students build the essential skills required to write concise and compelling messages applicable to myriad media types.
Learners explore the landscape of traditional publishing, social journalism, and self-publishing opportunities; as well as business-focused writing formats including advertising copy, press releases, proposals, direct mail, and blogs. Taken together, Media Writing Essentials offers a comprehensive view of the skills required for numerous writing roles. Learners who complete the program receive a non-credit Certificate of Completion from The New School.
“Writing is a vital skill and a passionate pursuit for so many people, but it can be difficult to find your place in the writing world without first knowing where you might excel and what it will take to get there,” said Mariana Amatullo, The New School’s Vice Provost for Global Executive Education & Online Strategic Initiatives.“Our faculty have found professional success in numerous writing-focused fields and are ready to share their experiences with aspiring writers.”
Media Writing Essentials features experts from across the writing spectrum. Instructors from The New School faculty include Novelist John Reed and faculty lead for the program and Media Content Strategist, Jess Ansari. The program also features William Earl, Editor at Variety; New York Times and National Book Critics Circle-honored author Mira Jacob; Nandi Pointer, Documentary Producer; and Sheila Munguia, Sr. Director of Global Communications for Peloton, among others. Rolling Stone staffers, including News Director Jason Newman and Politics Editor Patrick Reis, round out the list of esteemed contributors.
“Every single one of our writers knows how to conceive, report, research, and write a great story, but none were born with those abilities - they were taught,” said Rolling Stone Executive Editor, Sean Woods. “By working with The New School and Yellowbrick, we want to share what we’ve learned and inspire the next generation of reporters and storytellers.”
“Best-selling author Richard Bach famously said, ‘A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.’ In many ways that’s what this course is all about,” said Rob Kingyens, President and CEO of Yellowbrick. “We want to illuminate a path for anyone who has a passion for writing, and The New School and Rolling Stone are ideal partners to help us reach that goal.”
