Omada Insights Lab Finds that Personalized Coaching Significantly Improves Health Outcomes

  • Data combed from more than 500,000 members across 50 states highlights importance of integrated, virtual, patient-centered care

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Omada’s Insights Lab, the interdisciplinary collaboration and system for innovation within Omada Health, releases its first data report to highlight the impact of virtual-first care delivery in chronic disease management. Chronic conditions account for 90% of the U.S. healthcare spend, and Omada Health looks to alleviate that burden across its more than 1,600 customers. The report highlights that establishing meaningful relationships between care providers and patients is one key to optimal chronic disease prevention and management.

Omada Health provides virtual-first care programs across prediabetes, diabetes, hypertension, musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, as well as behavioral health. With more than 1+ billion actionable data points, 100+ million device interactions across all programs and 13+ million care team messages spanning these programs, the Omada Insights Lab found that:

  • Members that engaged with health coaches in the first week are 94% more likely to achieve desired health outcomes.
  • 88% of members across Omada's Prevention, Diabetes and Hypertension programs were satisfied with their programs and outcomes.
  • Members who message their coach or specialist experience two times the weight loss.
  • Proactive feedback from coaches led to a 10-15% increase in meal tracking retention, which correlates with a 0.5% increase in weight loss within the first four months, compared to a control group that received reactive coaching.
  • Research study members who participated in Omada’s diabetes program reported an average 0.8 to 1.4% reduction in hemoglobin A1C, 15-mg/dL average decrease in total cholesterol and 11% increase in medication adherence.
  • For the musculoskeletal program, 51% of members noted a pain reduction and 71% of members noted functional improvement. Additionally, 98% showed improvement in their area for concern with a 27% overall reduction in medical spend per member.

“Virtual-first care is not simply about automation at the edges of care delivery, but an opportunity to scale more trusted, reliable relationships with healthcare professionals across the member journey,” said Omada CEO and co-founder, Sean Duffy. “Omada is committed to the use of evidence-based clinical design, coupled with the science of behavior change and quantitative and qualitative data to draw insights. The building blocks of the Omada Insights Lab will be the fundamental drive of improvement and innovation in healthcare.”

Cigna health plan achieved significant savings and improved outcomes following the launch of their Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) with Omada in 2019. An analysis conducted by Cigna released earlier this year found that after two years, employers experienced an average of $989 in medical cost savings, net of program fees per program participant. The study also found that 19% of program participants lost 5% or more of their initial weight and maintained that weight loss in year one, increasing to 24% in year two.

“By providing the tools and support that address the root cause of unhealthy behavior rather than the symptoms, we can take steps to prevent many chronic conditions, including diabetes,” said Joan Harvey, president, care solutions, Evernorth, Cigna Corporation’s health services business. “Through our partnership with Omada, our customers at risk of diabetes have access to a diabetes prevention program that empowers them to take charge of their health and create sustainable changes that last.”
