PPG Foundation Awards $170,000 in Scholarships to Accelerate Students’ Academic Studies

PITTSBURGH--()--PPG (NYSE: PPG) today announced that the PPG Foundation is providing more than $170,000 in undergraduate college scholarships through the NATIONAL MERIT® Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The PPG Foundation has awarded more than 3,000 scholarships to help U.S. students accelerate their undergraduate studies and career opportunities since establishing the PPG Foundation Scholarship Program in 1956.

From aspiring engineers to physicians, the 2021 scholarships include 29 new awards for children of PPG employees and students who live in communities near PPG facilities. NMSC selects recipients based on scores earned on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which high school students take during their junior year.

“At PPG, we see higher education as a launching point for a diverse science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) talent pipeline,” said Malesia Dunn, executive director, PPG Foundation and corporate global social responsibility. “Our long-standing partnership with the National Merit Scholarship Program allows us to contribute to this pipeline by opening pathways to today’s students that will help them contribute to the world-changing technologies of tomorrow. We’re proud to support these students in their academic pursuits.”

Student recipients will receive awards annually for up to four years of their undergraduate studies.

“It is an honor to be a part of the prestigious scholarly community that has been awarded the PPG Foundation National Merit Scholarship,” said Caitlin Tang, who is the child of two PPG employees, Dr. Guangliang (Tony) Tang, primer products development global manager, Burbank, Calif., and Dr. Juexiao Cai, S&T research associate, Burbank, Calif. “I know that PPG is truly invested in students’ potential and has recognized the hard work that I have put into my education. The scholarship will be a key part of my academic journey.”

Tang plans to major in computational and systems biology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

In addition to the PPG Foundation scholarships, PPG Canada has also awarded scholarships annually since 2013 through Scholarship Partners Canada, a division of Universities Canada. The program was established in recognition of the increasing need for a highly trained workforce in Canadian industry, business and community life. In 2021, two scholarships were awarded to assist children of PPG Canada employees in their efforts to obtain a university or college education.
