SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Witherell’s Auction House presents A Century of Notoriety: The Estate of Al Capone, an epic live auction event on October 8, 2021 at The Sutter Club in Sacramento. As one of America’s most notorious figures of the 20th century, Capone’s estate will draw global interest as his personal items reveal riveting new details about his private life. Nearly 200 family treasures will be sold, from extravagant diamond jewelry and antique guns to vintage home movies and intimate prison letters hidden away for decades by his granddaughters and authenticated by Witherell’s.
“This is a high-profile auction of international significance and one of the most compelling events in Witherell’s 52-year history,” said Brian Witherell, cofounder of Witherell’s and guest appraisal expert on PBS’s popular series, “Antiques Roadshow.” “We are honored that the Capone Family chose Witherell’s to present their most treasured mementos and that they trust us to handle the estate with the diligence and security it requires.”
Living quietly for decades in a small Northern California town, Capone’s granddaughters are now revealing their personal stories about their grandfather, widely considered one of the most notorious American gangsters of the Prohibition era. Convicted of tax evasion in Chicago, Capone was transferred to Alcatraz on August 22, 1934.
“What people don’t know is his personal story as a father and grandfather and his painful path of redemption while at Alcatraz,” said granddaughter Diane Patricia Capone, daughter of his only son, Sonny Capone. “That is the unknown Capone I talk about in my book and it’s the story that comes to life with these family treasures.”
Diane Patricia Capone will headline an auction preview event on October 7 and sign copies of her book, Al Capone: Stories my Grandmother Told Me. The live auction is October 8 at The Sutter Club. Witherell’s will also take live bids online and by phone. The full collection can be viewed at Witherells.com, where those interested in owning a piece of history can also register to bid.
