Humboldt Social Announces Grand Opening of Scotia Lodge

Humboldt County Hospitality Group works to Normalize Cannabis in Hospitality

EUREKA, Calif.--()--Humboldt Social announced the opening of the 100-year-old Scotia Lodge. The boutique hotel, which went through a renovation and renaming, is nestled among the Redwoods and features modern, unique, and cannabis-friendly lodging and amenities for tourists and locals alike.

“We’re excited for the reopening of the Scotia Lodge following the hard work our team has put into thoughtfully renovating the building to its former glory. We’ve created a setting that celebrates the culture and community of Humboldt County and embraces lawful, responsible cannabis use by adults in a setting where they can relax, eat and socialize with friends and family,” said Aaron Sweat Co-Founder of Humboldt Social. “Our other Social locations such as Humboldt Bay Social Club and Papa & Barkley Social have already established themselves as a favorite place for locals and travelers to gather as friends and enjoy the beauty and community that are unique to Humboldt County.”

The Scotia Lodge is conveniently located at the Northern entrance of the Avenue of the Giants in the town of Scotia, California immediately off Highway 101, making it an ideal location for those interested in the endless natural wonders of the Redwoods State and National Parks. Humboldt’s beaches, rivers, historic towns, and burgeoning commercial cannabis industry are other key draws in the region.

Originally built in 1923 as The Mowatoc Hotel, the hotel was likened to a small-scale version of “the grand resort hotels of the national parks'' and served as a stagecoach stop between the Bay Area and Eureka. The hotel later became known as the Scotia Inn. The hotel was a centerpiece of the region, hosting guests from all over the world, grand weddings, and holiday celebrations.

Over the years, the Scotia Inn was neglected and in 2018 closed its doors. Humboldt Social purchased the Scotia Inn from The Town of Scotia in early 2021 and has carefully restored the space while preserving its historic integrity, including Craftsman-era woodwork and antique clawfoot tubs.

Scotia Lodge features 22 guest rooms, a grand lobby, ballroom, dining lounge, indoor and outdoor event spaces, and Main + Mill restaurant. Named after the intersection where Scotia Lodge sits, Main + Mill serves classic road food (salads, burgers, and filling entrees) and craft Americana cocktails in its full bar.

The Scotia Lodge provides its guests with an authentic experience that’s hard to come by at other hotel chains. “Our vision for Scotia Lodge is to continue offering a unique experience for travelers and locals while respecting its architecture and history. We embrace our surroundings as they embrace us. Humboldt has more cannabis farms than anywhere else in the world, and we want to share that with our guests,” said Aaron Sweat.

“We are thrilled for the opening of Scotia Lodge as it provides a rich and immersive hospitality option here in Humboldt, allowing us to connect our rural location and farms with cannabis tourists,” said Andelain Roy, owner and cultivator of DewPoint, a legacy cannabis farm in Southern Humboldt. “Our farms are a main economic driver of our region, and Scotia Lodge will provide a way to seamlessly integrate our livelihood and culture into the everyday experiences for visitors.”

Scotia Lodge will be joining Humboldt Social’s other hospitality and cannabis ventures, including the newly opened Papa & Barkley Social (with separate legal ownership), an innovative cannabis retail concept with a curated dispensary, cannabis day spa, food truck restaurant and outdoor smoking lounge. Inspired by the success of Papa and Barkley Social, Humboldt Social will soon be adding outdoor smoking areas to all of its locations.

“Humboldt County hotels need to create spaces for visitors to smoke cannabis. Imagine if Napa Valley didn’t offer safe places to drink wine! We are committed to taking care of our guests by offering them a legal space to consume cannabis while visiting,” explained Amy O’Connor, a Humboldt Social Founder. “For us, normalizing cannabis in hospitality means adding hospitality assets (e.g food and drink, spa, retail) to cannabis businesses and adding access to cannabis to hospitality locations, like easy third-party delivery options and outdoor smoking areas.”
