MANHASSET, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After more than a decade of planning and 13 months into the construction of the $325 million Petrocelli Advanced Surgical Pavilion, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) today held a steel beam topping off ceremony to signal Northwell Health’s ongoing commitment to delivering quality, state-of-the-art care to the region.
Local stakeholders, system leaders, donors and staff gathered to hand sign the beam and watch as it hoisted in place atop the seven-story, 280,000-square-foot building meant to transform the capabilities of the Level I trauma center and teaching hospital, which is home to the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital, the Katz Women’s Hospital, neurosurgery, transplant services and one of the busiest emergency departments in the New York Metropolitan area.
“The Petrocelli Advanced Surgical Pavilion represents the future of health care for Long Island and Queens residents,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health. “This impressive facility is the realization of a lot of planning and work that goes back more than a decade. It will serve to magnify all of the great things already happening at North Shore University Hospital.”
The pavilion will feature 18 operating rooms, including three hybrid operating suites with advanced imaging, 44 intensive care unit beds, a lobby at the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital and two levels of parking under the building. Northwell broke ground on the project in April 2020 and it is slated to be complete by the end of 2023.
“We appreciate the overwhelming support of the community to make this necessary infrastructure project possible,” said Jon Sendach, executive director of NSUH. “This is an important milestone as we move forward with its construction. Once the Petrocelli Pavilion is complete, it will help pave the way to the exciting future of medicine.”
Northwell Health also announced a significant gift from Kings Point, LI, residents Attilio and Beverly Petrocelli, to name the Petrocelli Pavilion and help make this capital project possible. For more than 27 years, the couple has supported the health system through numerous development projects and programs at NSUH and Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park.
Mr. Petrocelli is the chairman emeritus of United Capital Corporation, a real estate investment and management firm and manufacturer of engineered products, headquartered in Great Neck. Founded in 1980, United Capital owns commercial, retail, daycare and hotel properties throughout the United States.
“We are incredibly grateful to Attilio and Beverly for their generosity,” said Brian Lally, Northwell’s senior vice president and chief development officer. “Philanthropy is critical to Northwell Health, and helps us to take better care of more people. The Petrocellis’ support of this project will help us elevate the quality of care we deliver to all of those who come to North Shore University Hospital for complex surgical procedures and will greatly enhance the patient and healing experience.”
The Petrocellis’ generosity also supports Northwell’s seven-year, $1 billion Outpacing the Impossible fundraising campaign to fuel innovation to advance health care and support Northwell’s promise to the people it serves. The campaign – which supports capital projects, improves hospitals and clinical programs, advances research and funds endowment for teaching and research initiatives – was publicly launched in October 2018 and to date, has raised more than $800 million.
“All we are trying to do is give a little back that we’re so fortunate to have,” Mr. Petrocelli said. “A hospital is one of the best ways to do that because it helps the entire community.”
