Incoming Hopkins & Carley Leadership to Continue Strong Growth as Firm Adds Prominent Trademark Attorney, Employment Law Associates; and Elevates New Shareholder

PALO ALTO, Calif. & SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--Hopkins & Carley, a leading Silicon Valley law firm, is pleased to announce that it will cap off 2020 by welcoming a prominent Intellectual Property attorney, expanding its Employment & Labor practice, naming a new Shareholder, and introducing new firm-wide leadership.

Christine Redfield has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property Group in Palo Alto as Of Counsel. Redfield, widely recognized as one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s leading trademark lawyers, has extensive experience in strategic international brand counseling and protection including the development and management of international trademark portfolios, creative brand enforcement strategies, and protection of trademark rights online.

“Chris’ unique skills and commitment to client service perfectly complement those of our growing IP team,” said Chiara Portner, Co-Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. “With her robust trademark practice and the development of our data privacy and e-commerce practice, our IP Group now offers a broad array of branding and marketing services to our clients on a unified platform.”

“I’m delighted to return to the firm where I began my trademark practice and look forward to working alongside exceptional practitioners in the firm’s various practice areas,” said Redfield, who held long tenures with K&L Gates and Fenwick & West after leaving Hopkins & Carley in 2001. “Hopkins & Carley’s collaborative culture and full-service platform is as great a fit for my clients as it is for me.”

Managing Shareholder Jeffrey Essner said the firm is proud of its ability to attract such highly regarded and accomplished attorneys, a trend he expects will continue when he passes the firm-wide leadership reins to Ernest Malaspina on January 1, 2021. Malaspina has served as Deputy Managing Shareholder since 2018, a role Executive Committee member Jennifer Johnson will now take on.

“I am honored to become Hopkins & Carley’s next Managing Shareholder and thank Jeff for his leadership in so capably growing the firm during his successful 6-year tenure,” remarked Malaspina. “I will endeavor to build upon his accomplishments as we strive to meet the challenges of the ever-evolving dynamics in the legal market and continue to build out our practices to meet our clients’ needs.”

Hopkins & Carley has also welcomed Jonathan Heller, Michael Manoukian and Elaisha Nandrajog to its Employment & Labor practice in San Jose. The three Associates are experienced in defending companies against claims of wrongful termination, complex wage and hour class actions, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and failure to accommodate.

In addition, the firm will elevate Monique Jewett-Brewster to Shareholder on January 1, 2021. Jewett-Brewster, a member of Hopkins & Carley’s Financial Institutions & Creditors’ Rights Practice, has nearly 20 years of experience representing banks, lenders and other creditors in business bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings nationwide. Jewett-Brewster also helps lenders enforce commercial loans in out of court loan workouts and restructurings. She is deeply committed to the legal community and passionate about increasing diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession, having served as Chair of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California and Chair of the inaugural Diversity Outreach Committee of the California Lawyers Association; on the boards of the Black Women Lawyers Association of Northern California, the Financial Women's Association of San Francisco, and the Bay Area Bankruptcy Forum; and as a member of the California Minority Counsel Program's Ambassador's Council.

“Monique is a skilled and experienced financial institutions lawyer, a mentor to our younger attorneys, and a dedicated contributor to the larger profession and the community as a whole,” said Essner. “We congratulate her on this much-deserved promotion and look forward to her continued success.”
