PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AmeriHealth Caritas Chairman and CEO Paul A. Tufano has been appointed to the board of directors for America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the national association for providers of health care coverage and related services, and the foremost advocacy organization for access to affordable health care. Tufano joins c-level executives from eight other health insurers represented among AHIP’s new slate of board members.
As a board member, Tufano will help provide oversight for the country’s top health insurance trade organization. He will also have a larger platform to advance a personal vision of fair treatment and equality for all Americans, as well as advocate for Medicaid enrollees and the health plans serving them.
“I believe Medicaid can be a vital platform to help us build a country where everyone, regardless of economic status, race, disability, gender or sexual orientation, has access to quality health care. I am honored to have this opportunity to advocate for this vision,” said Tufano. “I look forward to working with AHIP to remove barriers to health care and help more people achieve their American Dream.”
Tufano has been CEO of AmeriHealth Caritas since March 2014 and chair of its board of directors since 2011. He began his health care career in 1999 at Independence Blue Cross, after previously serving as general counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Tufano is a graduate of Villanova University, where he and his wife Christine recently funded the establishment of an interdisciplinary initiative aimed at examining the issues of poverty and inequality and their intersection.
“As leaders in the health care field, our mission is to deliver affordable coverage and high-quality care to all Americans,” said AHIP President and CEO Matt Eyles. “Our Board plays an important role in helping us advance that mission, and we are excited to have Paul join us and continue to expand our focus on Medicaid and Medicaid health plans.”
