Adoption of Video Messaging and Screen Recording in Business Skyrockets by 400% as Remote Work Becomes the New Normal

  • In the past 90 days, Vidyard has added 2.8 million users of its video creation, sharing, and engagement tools, with an increase of more than 400% in new monthly sign-ups
  • More than 50% of business professionals report they are now sending asynchronous video recordings while 87% report greater use of live video conferencing
  • Fastest growing use-cases for screen recording and video sharing include sales, education, team collaboration, and internal communications

KITCHENER, Ontario--()--In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses everywhere are adopting new technologies to stay connected with customers, employees, and their own teammates while working remotely. Central to this shift has been the rise in popularity of online video as the next best thing to being there in person. New 2020 data from Vidyard and Demand Metric shows that not only is the use of video conferencing tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams skyrocketing, but so too is the use of asynchronous video recordings to connect with customers, share updates, and even replace live meetings with timely, on-demand videos.

Since mid-March, when remote work began for many in North America, Vidyard has added 2.8 million users of its video creation, sharing, and engagement tools. Videos created and shared by Vidyard users have been viewed more than 40 million times during the same three month period. These numbers represent an increase of more than 400% when compared to the same data from the previous 90-day period.

“Video is truly transforming the way organizations and business professionals are sharing information in the new world of remote business. Video is simply more efficient, more expressive, and therefore more effective than standard text,” says Michael Litt, co-founder, and CEO of Vidyard. “We’re seeing explosive growth in the number of people creating and sharing videos, and we’re also seeing more use-cases for video than ever before. Everyone from sales reps and business leaders to educators and project managers is now creating videos every day to connect with others in a digital-first world. It’s incredibly inspiring to see and we thank our team for stepping up to support the growing demands for video.”

Working from home, social distancing, and travel restrictions have led to an increase in both synchronous and asynchronous video usage

Vidyard and Demand Metric recently partnered on a new research report, “The State of Video in Remote Work,” to better understand how organizations and business professionals are using video while increasingly remote. Results have found that:

  • 94% of study participants are now using real-time, synchronous video conferencing for work-related purposes
  • 87% report using more video conferencing than ever before, yet only 6% report that they aren’t having any challenges with live video
  • More than 50% report they are now recording and sharing on-demand, asynchronous videos to communicate ideas with customers, employees, and colleagues
  • The most common use-cases for asynchronous videos include executive communications, project management, knowledge sharing, and sales outreach

Video use expands into new industries and smaller businesses

In addition to the rapid increase in its number of users, Vidyard has also seen an expansion in the types of roles and industries now embracing video. Since the shift to a remote working world, video adoption has surged most notably in high tech, education, real estate, expert trades, and professional services, while the most common use-cases reported by new users include sales, collaboration, education, and internal communications.

Overcoming the barriers to video in business

While synchronous video solutions such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams facilitate real-time video conferencing, asynchronous video solutions such as Vidyard enable users to quickly record custom videos that can be shared via email, social media, or internal chat tools. Videos can be watched on-demand at the convenience of the viewer with the ability to increase playback speed for more efficient consumption. Both synchronous and asynchronous video have increasingly important roles to play in the future of work.

According to the State of Video in Remote Work report, the top reasons business professionals are embracing asynchronous video recordings include:

  • Greater convenience than live video conferencing
  • More personal communication than email and chat
  • Reduce the number of live meetings and mitigate ‘video call fatigue

“We’re only scratching the surface of how video can be used to create a more connected, engaged, and efficient workforce in the digital age,” says Tyler Lessard, VP of Marketing at Vidyard. “With the barriers to video creation and sharing all but gone, we’re excited to see how businesses across all markets will capitalize on the power of video in the months and years ahead to enhance everything from sales and marketing to internal communications and employee engagement.”
