NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cohen Children’s Medical Center has earned top 40 national rankings for exceptional care in nine pediatric specialties – the most in the New York area – according to US News & World Report’s 2020 Best Children’s Hospitals. The largest provider of pediatric health services in New York State, Cohen Children’s has been ranked among the nation’s top children’s hospitals by US News for 14 consecutive years.
Cohen Children’s landed in the top 20 nationally in three disciplines: pediatric urology (ranking 17th), orthopedics (19th) and neurology/neurosurgery (20th). Urology jumped 22 places from the previous year while orthopedics moved up 13 spots among its peers. The children’s hospital also serves as New York’s largest Level 1 pediatric trauma center and a primary destination for emergency care.
The results underscore what the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic bore out: not only did Cohen Children’s become a leader in treating children with COVID-19, but also helped identify and treat children and adolescents with a Kawasaki-like disease, the multisystem inflammatory syndrome of childhood (MIS-C), a late response to COVID-19. No health system in the United States treated more hospitalized pediatric coronavirus patients between March-May than Cohen Children’s.
“We take a multidisciplinary approach to health care and that means Cohen Children’s Medical Center is excellent in its care of every organ system, every subspecialty,” said Charles Schleien, MD, MBA, senior vice president and chair of pediatric services at Northwell Health, and the Philip Lanzkowsky Chair and Professor of Pediatrics at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. “Our staff is accustomed to tackling complex diseases such as childhood cancers or MIS-C. Additionally, our medical staff is second to none in our ability to mobilize quickly during a crisis. That commitment to the patient ensures the best possible outcomes, and our standing in the US News & World Report’s rankings, bears that out.”
