Tech Empowers COVID-19 Meal Delivery Expansion

Eat Right’s market leading tools allow company to deliver thousands of additional meals

TAMPA, Fla.--()--When Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued the state’s safer-at-home order on April 1, the state became one of the last to lock down due to Coronavirus. Meal delivery services like Tampa-based Eat Right™ were suddenly swamped with orders for safe prepared home meal delivery. Not all firms were ready to meet this challenge but Eat Right™ has been delivering thousands of additional meals to its member’s homes each week.

“We saw a rapid uptick in membership prior to the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis,” said Eat Right co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Colby Fox. “But over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a huge spike in membership, pushing us to increase our output significantly. Fortunately, our technology was developed to rapidly grow Eat Right, and it has performed seamlessly.”

In addition to meeting the needs of its growing membership, Eat Right has donated and delivered thousands of meals to hospital frontline workers, first responders, and the homeless in Tampa during the crisis. The company has been able to meet this increased demand thanks to a custom-built software platform.

When Fox and former US Army veteran co-founder Cameron Fulks started Eat Right in 2017, they decided not to build the company on old technology. Instead, they invested $250,000 in custom software that handles everything from tracking members, processing payments, creating chef-approved shopping lists and tracking delivery drivers. Instead of requiring members to download a new app and learn to use it, Eat Right handles most customer interaction, including custom meal ordering, through its own chat software.

“We knew we couldn’t run this company on a spreadsheet, we needed something much more powerful,” Fox said. “Since our members are all communicating via text message these days, we had to build our system to interact with them through that medium. The software we needed wasn’t available, so we built it.”

Fox, a serial entrepreneur, owns a number of companies including Bit9 Systems, a software development firm. In partnership with Eat Right, Bit9 created software that allows members to customize their meal orders and have fresh, never frozen meals prepared by an award-winning chef and delivered safely to their doors every week.

“Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, we’ve seen our volume triple,” Fox said. “We can actually do more and we expect to if our members in Florida and Dallas remain at home much longer. Fortunately, this is exactly what we built our company to do. I’m very pleased to see the platform working as expected.”
