Sail Internet and Gardner Family Health Collaborate to Address the Digital Divide in Alviso, CA

Bay Area startup works with community organizations to extend the fiber experience to everyone

SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--For many years, the residents of Summerset Mobile Home Park in Alviso, CA, have been struggling with subpar internet service. Having been ignored by the traditional cable company who has failed to expand their service into the community, and where the residents today are significantly underserved by their existing DSL service which does not work well in the area, Summerset residents have found themselves right in the middle of the digital divide.

Residents of the mobile home park as well as other residents of Alviso, have been waiting for better internet as they watch large commercial building neighbors enjoy the benefits of fiber. With the right commercial and government building partnerships, Sail Internet could use rooftops in Silicon Valley to bring fiber-caliber high speed internet to residents in need.

Gardner Family Health is a family healthcare provider with 10 locations in Santa Clara and San Mateo County that delivers exceptional health care to people of all ages, backgrounds, and life circumstances. Through their familiarity with the community in Alviso, Gardner Family Health understood it was underserved by traditional service providers. Sail Internet collaborated with Gardner to improve Summerset’s internet access significantly. Gardner volunteered their rooftop as a location for Sail to install their fixed wireless technology.

From this location, Sail is able to serve the Summerset Mobile Home Park and other areas of Alviso as well. Residents in Summerset experienced a significant increase in the quality of their internet service. Previously, unable to stream basic services, residents now have access to fiber-caliber internet speeds up to 200Mbps.

Gardner benefited as well. Sail was able to provide their facility with high speed fixed wireless internet service for a reduced cost in exchange for the use of their rooftop.

This collaboration with Gardner is an example of how Sail Internet works in communities to create mutually-beneficial solutions to solve problems caused by the digital divide.

Ramón, a Summerset resident, said: “I work in IT and need to have the speed to access my remote site as well as speeds to watch internet TV. I’ve been using another company for 4 years that only offered me 4-30Mbps download and 4-20Mbps upload. And the cost was over $140 a month! Since Sail became available, I’m getting speeds over 200Mbps for $55 a month.”

Sail Internet’s Javier Quezada said, “Because Sail's service is not throttled or capped, Summerset residents enjoy unlimited data to stream, work, or access information.”
