Now Hiring – Community Journalists

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Postmedia Network Inc. (“Postmedia”) today announced it will be hiring 12 reporters under a federal program to fund journalism in geographical areas of limited news coverage in Canada.

“This is a tremendous boon for the communities in which these reporters will operate,” said Lucinda Chodan, Postmedia’s Senior Vice President, Editorial. “The funding will help us augment our coverage of civic issues and institutions of importance to Canadians.”

Through the Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) Postmedia is hiring journalists in areas including Fort McMurray, Alberta; Regina and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Brockville, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury and Timmins, Ontario; and Montreal, Quebec.

The reporters will be hired this spring for 15-month terms. The new journalists will cover stories of local importance and those stories will be made available to news organizations throughout Canada via the Canadian Press news agency.

Each of the reporters will supply content that reflects the specific characteristics of the region. For instance, the Local Journalism Initiative reporter hired at the Timmins Daily Press will focus on how resource-based communities adapt to contracting industries and increasing urbanization. The LJI journalist hired by the Montreal Gazette will report on Quebec anglophone communities outside Montreal.

“We’re looking for strong journalists who have great narrative skills on multiple platforms and a proven ability to initiate coverage and create contextual features,” Chodan said. For more information about the available positions, please click here.

The Local Journalism Initiative is a Canadian Heritage program, administered through News Media Canada, the national organization representing the country’s news media industry. The first call for applications took place in fall 2019. Funding for 105 journalists in 95 host newsrooms across the country was announced in December 2019.
