SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A quarter of enterprises are actively looking to shift their private wireless networks to a new technology and 41% of those are favouring a move to 4G and OnGo (CBRS 3.5GHz band) during 2020. So says a US study commissioned by Small Cells radio solutions specialist ip.access, released today.
The study, conducted by global research-based advisory and consulting firm Nemertes Research, revealed key drivers and future technology needs of enterprises currently deploying private networks across the US, polling 302 organisations spanning 10 industry segments ranging from manufacturing and retail to healthcare and tourism. More than 86% of organisations currently use Wi-Fi technology for their private networks, deployed chiefly for reasons of security, efficiency improvements and the need to support IoT systems. Now, 25% of those organisations are actively looking at switching to other technologies, citing ongoing concerns around the deployment and operational costs of Wi-Fi private networks, plus the indirect costs of having to over-spec and over-build the network to forestall problems with reliability, security, or performance. “The top three drivers for users of wireless networks are security, reliability, and cost,” says Johna Till Johnson, CEO and founder of Nemertes Research. “The need for greater security and reliability while containing costs is what’s motivating research participants to seek solutions beyond Wi-Fi.” Click HERE to download a copy of the research titled ‘Private Wireless Networks – Understanding drivers, concerns and future plans’.
Commenting on the research launch, ip.access Director of Marketing Programmes and Communications Emmanuela Spiteri: “What this report shows is that the need for wireless private networks continues to be compelling and, indeed, is significantly increasing with the growing breadth and depth of business use cases, including augmented reality, robotics and IoT applications. While Wi-Fi-based private networks have thus far delivered the ubiquity and low-cost required to meet some of those needs, enterprises now have the choice to move beyond Wi-Fi to private LTE-based networking, and benefit from enhanced security, reliability, performance and cost-effectiveness. This is particularly crucial for data-critical and critical communications applications that demand a robust and secure connection. In turn, switching to private LTE for primary networks will free up Wi-Fi to perform better for the BYOD and general customer applications, thus providing better QoS and reliability across the enterprise as whole.”
