CRANBURY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ophthalmology Times®, a leading multimedia platform dedicated to ophthalmologists, announced the top five winners of the 2019 Research Scholar Honoree Program at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) 2019 meeting in San Francisco.

To qualify for this exclusive recognition program, fellows and residents involved in unique and notable research in retinal disease submitted an abstract and a short summary outlining the contributions of their research to the retinal community. The top 15 finalists were invited to present their research at AAO, and the five winners were then selected by faculty judges present at the meeting.
The top five honorees are as follows:
First place – Shravani Mikkilineni, M.D., MBA, resident, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, “T2 Magnetic Resonance Assay for Detection of Ocular Candidiasis.”
Second place – Joseph Simonett, M.D., resident, Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, Oregon, “Blood Brain Barrier Disruption Maculopathy: A Common, Visually Significant Side-effect in a Growing Population.”
Third place – Diana M. Laura, M.D., resident, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida, “Genotypic and Phenotypic Antibiotic Resistance in Staphylococcus Epidermidis Endophthalmitis.”
Fourth place – Brad Jacobsen, M.D., resident, Moran Eye Center, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, “Prevalence of Retinal Diseases and Associated Risk Factors in an African Population from Mwanza, Tanzania.”
Fifth place – Michael P. Ellis, M.D. resident, UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, California, “Cost Analysis of Tele-ophthalmology Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy Using Tele-health Billing Codes.”
The 2019 Research Scholar Honoree Program is chaired by Rishi P. Singh, M.D., and faculty judges include Thomas A. Albini, M.D., Andrew A. Moshfeghi, M.D., MBA, Sophie J. Bakri, M.D. and Philip J. Rosenfeld, M.D., Ph.D.
