First-hand Witnesses Recount Role Weed Played During Monumental Era of LGBTQ History, Global Health, American Politics & Culture

“Survival Stories” at Weedmaps Museum of Weed explores the cannabis connection to the health and happiness of long term HIV/AIDS survivors

IRVINE, Calif.--()--There was little certainty about anything related to the disease when the AIDS pandemic reached full swing in the late 1980s and early 1990s. But death soon after a diagnosis was universally considered a sure thing. Except for some.

Seemingly without explanation, thousands of individuals diagnosed in the early days of AIDS have been living healthy, happy lives for decades. How cannabis alleviated pain and other ailments for those who suffered through and eventually died is well documented. But its role in the health and happiness of long-term survivors is less known.

In conjunction with LGBTQ History Month, the Weedmaps Museum of Weed, will present Survival Stories: The Role Cannabis has Played in the Health and Happiness of Long Time HIV Survivors. This one-night only event will bring together individuals who were integral to the medical cannabis, AIDS and gay rights movements and those who were most impacted and lived to tell about it.

Among the panelists who will share (some for the first time) behind-the-scenes stories from the early days of AIDS/LGBTQ activism and the role cannabis plays in survivorship are John Entwistle Jr., co-founder of the first medical cannabis dispensary in the USA and head of the Dennis Peron Legacy Project; Paul Scott, former nurse, longtime activist and head of the LA Black LGBT Movement; and the Honorable Gabe Quinto, El Cerrito City Council member and former El Cerrito Mayor. The discussion will be moderated by Jai Rodriguez, best known as the culture guide on Bravo network's Emmy-winning show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. This first of its kind event is presented by Weedmaps, in partnership with Equality California.
