SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Rover.com®, the world’s largest network of 5-star pet sitters and dog walkers, today released “America’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2019,” its first annual report which ranks the top 20 most popular dog breeds in the country and reveals which breeds are preferred in 40 major cities across the U.S.
Rover’s report also examined how pet parents choose a new companion and the considerations that influence their decision making process. The data revealed leading factors are a dog’s size (54%), cost for ongoing care (43%), and disposition (36%). A pet parent’s own personal lifestyle was also top of mind for nearly 80% of people, including their living situation (50%), family (42%), schedule (39%), and activity level (30%).
“Regardless of size, color, or personality, bringing a dog home and welcoming them into your family is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences in life,” said Bill Kong, CMO at Rover. “Every dog has an abundance of unconditional love to offer. However, depending on one’s living situation, lifestyle, and budget, some prospective pet parents are looking for specific traits. Fortunately, there’s a dog for everyone and every home whether you choose to adopt or shop.”
To help prospective pet parents learn about the best dog breed options based on their lifestyle and personal preferences, Rover also created a new Dog Breed Selector Tool.
America’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2019: Report Findings
Analyzing data from more than half a million pet parents, Rover ranked the 20 most popular dog breeds nationwide. Rover then looked at 40 top U.S. cities to find regional differences and showcased the five most popular breeds that outpaced the national rank in each of those cities. The city data includes findings from 40 U.S. cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington D.C. and more.
Interestingly, over one-third (37%) of owners did no research before choosing a dog, citing it was “love at first sight,” and the majority (62%) of dog parents do not wish they had done any additional research either. Regardless of the selection process, the majority of dog owners are pleased with the breeds that they chose. Eighty-four percent of pet parents indicated that they would recommend their current breed to a friend, and more than half (57%) said that they will either probably or definitely get the same breed again. No matter which breed was selected, the report clearly indicates that people love their furry family members. Nearly nine out of 10 (88%) pet parents stated that they were happier when living with a dog than without one.
