RALEIGH, N.C.--()--Smart Efficient Lighting Control (SELC), a Xylem brand, is recognized as the Americas market share leader in streetlight nodes according to the latest Northeast Group report. The independent report, Global Smart Street Lighting and Smart Cities: Market Forecast (2019-2028), revealed that of the 2.8 million lighting control nodes deployed by the end of 2018 in North, Central and South America, SELC is the leader in installed streetlight controls with a 22% market share.

Smart city or smart utility initiatives are often tied to installing streetlight controls and new LED fixtures. SELC’s network lighting controls can be programmed to turn on whenever a storm rolls in, flash in the event of a public safety issue and dim or shutoff to conserve energy. When the smart lights are used with a communication network, crews can be alerted right away to restore service.

The streetlight intelligence report identifies Florida Power & Light (FP&L) among the largest reported deployments underway in North America with 575,000 SELC lighting controls. The utility is using smart technology to improve street light restoration response times and enhance customer service across its service area.

Consultant Joe Hancock, retired principal engineer for lighting at FP&L, chose SELC for the FP&L Smart Lighting Program because of the nodes’ reliability and robustness. “We wanted a proven technology to ensure an efficient upgrade to smart street lighting,” said Hancock. “The performance of the SELC smart lighting control is top-notch. It is highly reliable—even in challenging environments—and allowed us to pinpoint an outage and restore service quickly.”

The 2019 market report estimates a 24 percent penetration rate globally in smart lighting solutions over the next ten years.

Smart streetlights are forming the basis of smart city projects,” said Northeast Group President Ben Gardner. “We estimate cities and utilities will network 72 million streetlights globally over the next decade.”

The SELC programmable streetlight controls meet North America and international standards and offer long life, reliability and integrity.
