Nuveen Announces Update to Portfolio Management Team

NEW YORK--()--The Nuveen Credit Strategies Income Fund (NYSE: JQC) has updated its portfolio management team. Effective immediately, Bernard Wong is co-portfolio manager, along with current co-portfolio managers Scott Caraher and Jenny Rhee. The fund’s investment objectives, strategies and management philosophy remain unchanged. The capital return program implemented by the fund at the beginning of the year also is not affected by the change to the portfolio management team.

The appointment of Wong as co-portfolio manager follows the decision by co-portfolio manager Sutanto Widjaja to leave Symphony Asset Management, which sub-advises JQC on behalf of Nuveen, to pursue his ambition of opening a multi-family investment office. Widjaja’s new venture in no way competes with Symphony or Nuveen. He will remain at the firm through September to support his colleagues through the transition but has relinquished his co-portfolio manager role on JQC and holds no other portfolio manager role. The other co-portfolio managers, Caraher and Rhee, also serve as Symphony’s co-heads of investments and also lead loans and high yield, respectively.

Wong is a senior investment analyst at Symphony who has been at the firm since 2005 and worked closely with Widjaja on JQC since 2012, giving him deep familiarity with the portfolio and ensuring the continuity of the investment strategy. Wong will continue to participate in Symphony’s Investment Committee alongside other portfolio managers and contributing analysts.

Wong’s bio follows.

Bernard Wong, co-portfolio manager at Symphony Asset Management, is a member of the firm’s investment team, and his responsibilities include portfolio management for JQC as well as fundamental research focusing on the retail sector. Prior to joining Symphony in 2005, he was an analyst at KBC Alternative Investment Management in its long-short credit group. Before that Wong was a finance manager at Gap Inc. and an associate in the Leveraged Finance group at Lehman Brothers. He received an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BS in business administration from the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley. He is also a Certified Public Accountant and a CFA Charterholder.
