NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Metis, a leading provider of data science skills training for individuals and businesses, is announcing its Advancing Women in Data Science Scholarship, which will award four full-tuition scholarships to women applying to its September bootcamps in Chicago and Seattle (two at each campus). These scholarships, totalling nearly $70,000, builds upon Metis’s ongoing efforts to create a culture of inclusion and diversity within the growing field of data science. Since Metis first launched in 2013, it has awarded over $800,000 in scholarships around the country to those underrepresented in STEM careers.
According to the 2019 Burtch Works Study, completed by executive recruiting firm Burtch Works, women represent only 17% of the workforce within the data science field. For managers and higher level positions, the gender gap is even more acute.
“We are incredibly excited about offering these full scholarships to women aspiring to be data scientists and changing the industry’s landscape for the better. It’s unacceptable that the gender gap in the field is so lopsided. We must reverse this disparity and create more avenues for talented women to enter, remain, and succeed in the data science field,” said Debbie Berebichez, Chief Data Scientist, Metis. “These cities are great places to continue these change efforts. We encourage women who qualify to apply and look forward to seeing you there.”
These scholarships will build upon Metis’s commitment in educating female data science talent. Since June 2017, Metis has trained and graduated eight cohorts of students in Seattle, totaling 84 data scientists, of which nearly 50 percent are women. And since January 2017, Metis has trained and graduated 10 cohorts of students in Chicago, totalling 105 data scientists, including nearly a third who are women. According to Indeed, Seattle remains one of the best locations in the United States for data scientists in terms of salary, with annual earnings of $146,088. In Chicago, that earnings figure is $123,713.
Metis alumni now work at many of Seattle and Chicago's leading companies and organizations, including Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon, Indeed, Capital One, Capgemini, US Foods, United Airlines, and Grubhub.
