Visit Carlsbad, Pantone Color Institute, and Fohr Announce Results of the 2019 Colors of Travel Study, Highlighting Trending Colors in Inspirational Travel Photos across Social Media

CARLSBAD, Calif.--()--Following the success of Colors of Carlsbad 2018, Visit Carlsbad, in partnership with the Pantone Color Institute and quantitative influencer marketing platform Fohr, announces the results of the 2019 Colors of Travel Study, which identifies trending colors used in inspirational travel photos across social media and the color psychology that inform these themes. The study revealed this year’s trending Colors of Travel as: PANTONE 16-1522 Rose Dawn, a gentle and comforting or soft and subtle or warm and welcoming dusty pink; PANTONE 15-4323 Ethereal Blue, an open and expansive blue hue that conjures up visions of endless opportunities or rouses our imagination or inspires feelings of unfettered freedom and the desire to run and play; PANTONE 19-4535 Ocean Depths, a refreshing deep teal reminiscent of the color of the sea, coastal shorelines and the watery paradise of deep lagoons; and PANTONE 16-0948 Harvest Gold, a warmly lit solarized shade emblematic of autumn’s yellow florals as well as spectacular sunsets and exotic culinary surprises.

To create the 2019 Colors of Travel study, Fohr selected 75 influencers with an Instagram following of 50,000 or greater and their five most engaged Instagram photos. These images were analyzed to determine the four most common colors.

“Color has always been a part of why we travel. The desire to 'see' a new place is rooted in a mental image we've already conjured: we are drawn to land & cityscapes that look drastically different to our own. Instagram's influence over people's travel decisions is incredibly dominant,” says Grace Murray, Vice President at Fohr. “Using a quantitative analysis approach, we discovered that the current trending, appealing, and engaging hues in inspiration travel photos are much more grounded, calming and muted compared to the vibrant hues from a similar study last year.”

Visit Carlsbad celebrates the launch of this new palette with a variety of multicolored culinary offerings, wellness treatments, and outdoor experiences from Carlsbad’s best restaurants, resorts, and spas. Vibrant culinary offerings across the destination include: fresh golden scallops mindfully paired with earthy spring vegetables from Jeune et Jolie; bright, wholesome seafood, vegetable, and charcuterie dishes from 20|Twenty Grill at Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa; muted pink, lively blue, and primitive yellow cocktails and beer offerings that bring the colors’ refreshing, floral, spicy, and balanced properties into drinkable form at Jeune et Jolie, Chandler’s at Cape Rey Carlsbad, Ocean Pool Bar & Grill at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort & Spa, Barrel Republic, and Park 101. Rose Dawn and Ocean Depths come to life through rich, inspiring wellness experiences including a Red Algae Body Scrub at Ocean Crest Spa, located at Cape Rey Carlsbad, the OSEA Facial--a Patagonian seaweed treatment--at The Spa at Omni La Costa, and a Tropical Body Polish treatment from Ocean Pearl Spa at Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. Additional vivid experiences include a color-packed picnic and electric bike ride at Pedego Carlsbad and an outdoor art instillation at the Carlsbad Art Wall.

“One of Southern California’s quintessential beach towns, Carlsbad draws travelers near and far to the destination year after year with our seven miles of pristine coastline, outdoor adventure experiences from surfing to kayaking, and our local food and beer scene,” says Sam Ross, Executive Director, Visit Carlsbad. “This summer, we are thrilled to offer colorful offerings for locals and travelers alike that bring to life all that Carlsbad has to offer.”

“From the open and expansive blue sky that conjures up endless opportunities for outdoor recreation and the soothing deep teal lagoon waters, to the savory and spicy golden yellow suggestive of exotic culinary surprises, and warming rose tone of the wondrous sunrise, this year’s colors highlighted in the 2019 Colors of Travel Study brings to life the unique beauty of Carlsbad’s natural surroundings and wellness oriented lifestyle,” says Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. “Calming and comforting, yet at the same time, inspiring our imagination and containing a touch of the exotic, a palette of color that expresses our desire to engage, connect and experience; not only with nature and with others, but also with ourselves.”
