Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy Celebrates Graduates with In-Person Commencement Ceremony

MANISTEE, Mich.--()--Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy (MGLVA), an online public-school serving K-12 students throughout the state, will celebrate the Class of 2019 at an in-person commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 2nd. The ceremony will take place at 2:00 pm at the Waverly High School Auditorium in Lansing.

Many assume that attending an online public school like MGLVA means that students miss out on the ‘real’ high school experiences, but this in-person graduation proves quite the opposite.

This year, MGLVA will graduate over 210 students, fifty-six of whom are “legacy students” who have been enrolled at MGLVA their entire high school career. Twenty-three students graduate with a cumulative GPA above 3.5.

Collectively, the class reports having been accepted to colleges and universities across Michigan and beyond, including: Michigan State University, Oregon State University, Oakland University Honors College, Central Michigan University, Olivet College, Wayne State University, several local community colleges, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.

“We couldn’t be prouder of MGLVA’s Class of 2019 who have risen to the challenge to define their own future,” said Kendall Schroeder, head of school for MGLVA. “We know it took a lot of hard work to reach this milestone, and we all hope you strive for all the things that are worthwhile and important in your lives.”

Zoe Dewit and Amal Oudeif serve as co-Valedictorians. Zoe plans to attend Wayne State University while Amal plans to continue studies at Washtenaw Community College and transfer to the University of Michigan. Kathryn Sikora will serve as Salutatorian and is undecided on her post-secondary studies at this time. All three students, as well as Mr. Schroeder, will be available for media interviews.

Students enroll in virtual school for a number of reasons, including those looking to escape bullying, those looking to get back on track academically, or those looking for an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom setting. MGLVA students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects and a host of electives and attend live virtual classes every day taught by state-licensed teachers.
