Priority Health Promotes Skin Cancer Prevention through "Sun Smart" Campaign

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--()--Michigan-based health insurer, Priority Health, launches its Sun Smart campaign today to educate and encourage Michigan residents to make smart sun choices by providing sun protection solutions this summer.

“Skin cancer is one of the most common, yet most preventable forms of cancer,” said Dr. James Forshee, chief medical officer at Priority Health. “After a long and cold winter, Michiganders are eager to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. The Sun Smart campaign encourages community members to enjoy the weather while making smart choices to protect their skin.”

As part of the campaign, which runs through Labor Day, Priority Health is spearheading a Sun Smart selfie social media challenge. The challenge encourages community members to share photos of themselves being sun smart (i.e. wearing sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, sitting in the shade, etc.). For every selfie posted with the hashtag, #PriorityHealthSunSmart, the company will donate $1 to the American Cancer Society of Michigan (up to $10,000 in total) to support cancer research, including initiatives specific to skin cancer.

“As we continue to fight for a cancer-free world, campaigns such as Priority Health Sun Smart are pushing us one step closer to achieving this goal,” said Blythe Moran, executive director of the American Cancer Society of Michigan. “It’s imperative that we’re all actively taking measures to prevent skin cancer and we’re thrilled to collaborate with Priority Health to promote a sun-safe lifestyle.”

Priority Health will share tips on its social media channels specific to skin cancer awareness and prevention. Content will focus on the importance of limiting sun exposure and protecting your skin, as well as early detection through regular preventive screenings and self-skin exams.

In addition, Priority Health will participate in a variety of family-friendly events this summer to give away sun smart safety solutions, including sunscreen and color-changing UV exposure stickers that notify users when it’s time to reapply.
