NYC Maritime Hackathon 2019: Connecting Big Data And Maritime

Over an intensive 36-hour period, entrepreneurs, investors, maritime executives and tech leaders will collaborate to develop solutions that aim to transform the maritime industry.

NEW YORK--()--The newly launched New York Maritime Innovation Center (NYMIC) in partnership with R1 Labs will host the NYC Maritime Hackathon March 29 – March 31, 2019. The hackathon will address real-world challenges around data in the shipping industry, including Maritime Big Data, Cyber Security and Supply Chain Velocity, focusing on ports, logistics and supply chain. This is NYC’s second hackathon for the maritime industry. In 2017, R1 Labs hosted NYC’s first hackathon on the topic: the Ports, Logistics and Shipping Hackathon. The event will take place at Company (335 Madison Ave).

The New York Maritime Innovation Center at SUNY Maritime College was formed in late 2017 to “convene, connect and catalyze” new ideas and technologies to move the global maritime industry forward.

100+ participants (developers, designers, domain experts) will convene for 36 hours of building prototypes and rapid fire market validations. Participants will have rare access to top maritime industry and tech executives, investors and entrepreneurs so they can effectively work on building MVPs (Minimum Viable Products) for commercially viable solutions.

The hackathon kicks off Friday March 29, 6pm with keynotes from Inna Kuznetsova (Board Member | Independent Non-Executive Director, Chairman of Remuneration, Nomination Committee, Global Ports Investments Plc (LSE:GLPR); Entrepreneur, Advisor), Tero Hottinen, (Director of Emerging Digital Business, Cargotec), Natan Reddy, (Senior Intelligence Analyst, CB Insights), Dr. Christopher Clott (Director & Co-Founder, New York Maritime Innovation Center (NYMIC) / ABS Chair of Marine Transportation & Logistics, SUNY Maritime College), industry leaders, partners, and sponsors introducing the state of the shipping industry and presenting the critical issues and problem sets to tackle.

Hackathon projects will be judged on business potential and applicability for a pilot program. Participants will compete to win prizes including cash ($1000 as top prize) and a chance to participate in the inaugural NYMIC Bootcamp Accelerator to work with industry executives and investors to grow their solutions for market-readiness. Judges include industry executives from the maritime industry. Demos from the weekend will be presented Sunday March 31.

Sponsors and industry partners include: SUNY Maritime College, Wärtsilä, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Seabury Maritime, Liberty Global Logistics, Shakti Software, TecPier, DNV GL, Global Container Terminals, Hudson Trident, Cargotec, Matchback Systems, Spire Maritime, NY Tech Alliance and Urban Tech NYC. If interested in sponsoring, please reach out to Daren daren@r1labs.com.

To register for the hackathon or the Sunday demo, please register for tickets through Eventbrite. Hackathon demos are open to the non-participants and the public, please register for tickets in advance.
