CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CBTS, a leading technology provider that delivers communications, cloud, infrastructure, and consulting solutions to clients across North America, today announced its Carrier Open Infrastructure (COI) reference architecture, along with new high-performance 10GB optical networking solutions. These products are designed to help carriers leverage open source virtual networking functions (VNFs) and common, off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware to grow revenue as broadband speeds increase and average revenue per-subscriber (ARPU) declines. COI leverages the Central Office Redefined as a data center (CORD) framework created by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) and is deployed on open source hardware from the Open Compute Project (OCP).
“Global carriers are struggling to find ways to increase service levels while lowering total cost of ownership, as subscribers continue to demand both increasingly high-speed broadband and lower fees,” said Chris DePuy from 650 Group. “Continuing to build out hardware-based optical access networks with custom silicon and ‘big iron’ switching and routing is simply unsustainable. Carriers are increasingly turning to open source VNFs deployed on COTS hardware, both of which are benefitting from increased innovation based on community contributions from organizations like ONF and OCP. Companies like CBTS are accelerating that innovation and making the necessary solutions much easy for carriers to deploy.”
COI Open Access Architecture
COI is a multi-access architecture encompassing copper, fiber and wireless at gigabit speed, and is applicable to any carrier that has a fixed or wireless network, including cable, wireline and mobile operators. COI leverages the vOLTHA/SEBA SDN framework, enabling carriers to deploy and maintain heterogeneous networks with multiple vendors. In addition to developing the architecture and the optical networking components, CBTS will provide tier 1 and 2 support services, helpdesk, Integration, advanced replacement, and field services.

“We developed COI and our new OCP-based optical access solutions in response to the pressing need we see to support carriers straining to conduct national expansion initiatives in the face of ongoing subscriber demand for higher bandwidth and increased competition driving subscription fees down,” said Greg Harrison, Vice President of Enterprise Programs for CBTS. “These developments build on our long history of success in SDN projects for the world’s largest carriers and on our deep commitment to industry open source initiatives including ONF and OCP. We look forward to continuing to build on the momentum we have created with COI, and to innovating even further with the help of our growing community.”
