40 Percent of Cloud and SaaS Network Operators to Implement Closed-loop Automation in the Next 12 Months, and 70 Percent Within 24 Months – According to Latest Research

MENLO PARK, Calif.--()--The efficiency, dynamism, and rapid service delivery of today’s cloud titans is the envy of world business, but new research reveals that the same technologies are being eagerly embraced by cloud services, webscale enterprises and SaaS cloud network operators.

The research report Cloud Network Automation Trends, released today by Futuriom, focuses on the interest in and uptake of cloud network automation technologies. It provides a detailed analysis of cloud networking goals and challenges, and the technological components best suited for network automation. The research is based on interviews with director level data center professionals from 91 cloud, webscale enterprise, and SaaS network operators across the U.S., China, and the UK – three regions where data center infrastructure is being deployed most aggressively. The study shows overwhelming commitment to network automation: a dominant majority (70 percent) of the cloud and SaaS network operators plan to implement closed-loop automation within the next 24 months. Forty percent plan to implement it within a year. The key drivers are increased revenue and improved network security, followed by greater support for dynamic and on-demand services. Cost savings are secondary and automated fault resolution was identified as a critical driver for reducing operating costs.

A resounding 93 percent of those surveyed reckoned networking telemetry, monitoring and analytics as important for network automation, with half of them naming Intent-Based Networking among the top three enabling technologies.

“These results are very much in line with our own customer feedback,” commented Michael Wood, Chief Marketing Officer & VP of Product, Apstra. “Giants like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and LinkedIn have raised the bar on operational efficiency, and now other cloud providers are urgently looking for ways to bring their own efficiency, performance and response times in line with the leaders.”

Asked how they are currently automating data center operations, the majority (57 percent) are using commercial automation software, compared with 52 percent using scripting and programming and 50 percent tools built in-house. As Michael Wood observed, “One of the things we often hear is that if an automation solution had been available out of the box 15 to 20 years ago, then at least half of these hyperscale providers would have used that instead of designing it themselves. In-house design means they end up effectively locked into their own solutions!”
