Carnegie Learning Given Level 1 ‘Strong’ Rating by Johns Hopkins University’s Evidence for ESSA Initiative

Carnegie Learning Math Solution meets new ESSA standards with Level 1 “Strong Evidence” of efficacy, the highest rating available

PITTSBURGH--()--Carnegie Learning announced today that the Carnegie Learning Math Solution meets U.S. Department of Education standards under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) as a Level 1 program demonstrating “Strong Evidence” of efficacy. Reviewed by Evidence for ESSA at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Research and Reform in Education, it was rated “Strong,” the highest rating available. This ranking makes Carnegie Learning a strong choice for all state- and district-level funding, including Title I.

Evidence for ESSA aims to provide clear, authoritative information on programs that meet the ESSA evidence standards and enable educators and communities to select effective educational tools to improve student success.

ESSA classifies “evidence-based” programs according to the following levels1:

  1. Strong - At least one well-designed and well-implemented experimental study (i.e., a randomized trial)
  2. Moderate - At least one well-designed and well-implemented quasi-experimental study (e.g., a matched comparison study)
  3. Promising - At least one well-designed and well-implemented correlational study with statistical controls for selection bias

An independent, “gold standard” study funded by the U.S. Department of Education and conducted by the RAND Corporation showed that the Carnegie Learning blended approach nearly doubled growth in performance on standardized tests relative to typical students in the second year of implementation. This study, involving more than 18,000 students in 147 schools across seven states, is more comprehensive and rigorous than any other research study on a middle school or high school mathematics program.

In addition, Carnegie Learning offers the only middle school math curriculum to achieve a perfect score from EdReports.org in Focus & Coherence and Rigor & Mathematical Practices, while also providing best-in-market adaptive learning technology.

The Carnegie Learning instructional approach also helps students develop the five social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making.2 It combines group learning, which gives students opportunities to collaborate and build interpersonal skills, with individual learning through MATHia®, a 1:1 coaching software platform that meets each student exactly where they are, empowering them to own their learning as they build skills and monitor their own progress.

“We appreciate the team at Evidence for ESSA for their rigorous review,” says Barry Malkin, CEO of Carnegie Learning. “Our team of cognitive scientists, instructional designers and master math practitioners work tirelessly to create the best possible solution for students and teachers.”

"The study by the RAND Corporation is one of the strongest studies of an algebra curriculum ever conducted and follows from a history of rigorous research on the efficacy of our approach, including hundreds of peer-reviewed studies as well as research sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation,” says Dr. Steve Ritter, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist at Carnegie Learning. "Carnegie Learning was founded on research into how students learn, and we have continued to carefully evaluate the effectiveness of our products. We're proud that Evidence for ESSA has recognized us as having strong evidence of effectiveness.”
