BETHESDA, Md.--()--In honor of Presidents Day, the de Beaumont Foundation has released a quiz to share interesting facts about U.S. presidents and how their policy, advocacy, and private lives have influenced Americans’ health. The quiz can be taken online at bit.ly/presidentsdayquiz.

“Collectively, our elected officials – at the state, local, and federal levels – have as much or more influence on Americans’ health as doctors and hospital CEOs,” said Brian C. Castrucci, chief executive officer of the de Beaumont Foundation. “We created this quiz to make Presidents Day fun while also noting the vital role of policy in shaping and improving health.”

While completing the survey, respondents will learn:

  • Which U.S. President ordered the first mass vaccination in America;
  • The childhood disease that President Theodore Roosevelt overcame before becoming a Rough Rider, boxer, and wrestler; and
  • The trigger that led President Dwight D. Eisenhower to help raise awareness of heart disease prevention.

For more history of what American presidents, as individuals, have conveyed to the population about health through their own actions and words, see “Presidential Promotion of Health-Related Behaviors Through Words and Example,” by Marc A. Safran, USPHS, Military Medicine, volume 178, issue 4 (April 2013).
