SAN FRANCISCO, SAN DIEGO & WASHINGTON--()--This week, California Life Sciences Association (CLSA), the trade association representing California’s life sciences sector, convened its leadership in Washington, D.C, in order to connect biomedical industry leaders and entrepreneurs with key lawmakers in Congress. The purpose of the 2019 Life Sciences Leadership Advocacy Day was to support policymakers in better understanding the value and work that California’s innovative life sciences sector brings to patient care, the economy and more.

Participants in the Life Sciences Leadership Hill Advocacy Day met with several newly-elected California Members of Congress, as well as veteran legislators on key committees of jurisdiction for the life sciences sector, who were eager to understand more about the life sciences community and hear views on specific policies that could improve patient care and bring positive change for California patients and their families

“As the 116th Congress begins their important work, California Life Sciences Association (CLSA) looks forward to continuing our work with the entire California Congressional Delegation to advance policies that improve health and bring positive change for California patients and their families,” said Mike Guerra, President & CEO of CLSA. “On behalf of our membership and California’s statewide life sciences community – a sector that employs over 311,000 Californians - we were proud to host the 2019 Life Sciences Leadership Advocacy Day. This important day brought together Members of Congress with biomedical entrepreneurs and sector leaders to learn about the importance of life sciences job creation, investment and innovation happening in the Golden State.”

During the fly-in, CLSA brought together representatives from approximately ten CLSA member organizations to meet with over a dozen Members of Congress and their staffs. The topics discussed with lawmakers included issues ranging from: (1) the value of innovation and California’s role in developing life-changing therapies and treatments for the most debilitating of diseases; (2) the commitment of CLSA members to working collaboratively with legislators and stakeholders toward policies that will make healthcare more accessible and affordable for patients; and (3) the need for balanced policies that make medicines and technologies affordable for patients, while retaining critical incentives for investment in new medicines and technologies to improve and enhance patients’ lives.
