PLANO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Tyler Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: TYL), the largest software company in the U.S. solely based on providing integrated software and technology services to the public sector, has announced its support for the passage of the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act. This legislation, which includes the OPEN Government Data Act, has been championed for the past decade by leaders of Tyler’s Data & Insights Division, whose Socrata solution enables compliance with this law and helps government agencies achieve the full range of open data benefits faster, more sustainably, and at cloud-scale.
The new law joins landmark legislation, such as the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act and the Freedom of Information Act, in validating the growing need for open data. This law demonstrates a commitment to data-informed policymaking, improving statistical analysis across all levels of government, and the value of making standardized data available to the public.
Beyond requiring open data, this law will reduce transaction costs for businesses, engage communities by increasing access to information, and lead to a standardized system of evidence-based policymaking.
Socrata, Tyler’s flagship data and insights solution, provides easy-to-deploy and FedRAMP-accredited cloud technology to unlock siloed government data. The proven and rigorous success methodology of Tyler’s Data & Insights Division, combined with its experienced domain experts in Washington, D.C., will help federal agencies evolve quickly from compliance with the law to making data a central component of every government program. This approach creates a sustainable open architecture for data sharing and analytics that puts data at the heart of every government program.
Since 2009, Socrata has enabled government agencies to publish and share data with the public in open formats with the Socrata Open Data API. Successful Socrata Open Data clients include:
- U.S. Department of Transportation: uses the Socrata platform to share state crash data, enable access to data from intelligent transportation systems technologies, and drive data-informed policy-making.
- Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services: uses Socrata data visualization tools to identify areas of disparities between subgroups of Medicare beneficiaries in health outcomes, utilization, and spending. These insights are used by stakeholders to inform policy decisions, target populations or geographic areas for interventions, and understand racial and ethnic differences in health outcomes.
“This legislation represents a critical culture shift toward governments using evidence-based decision-making to advance a mission,” said Kevin Merritt, president of the Data & Insights Division and a past advisor to the U.S. Department of Commerce Data Advisory Council. “While several noteworthy agencies have taken important steps to democratize data, the broad support provided by this new law further will transform government information into actionable data that informs strategic policymaking and improves outcomes.”
