WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Organization for Occupational Radiation Safety in Interventional Fluoroscopy (ORSIF) today announced the release of a new economic study entitled “Economic Impacts of Radiation Exposures Associated with Interventional Fluoroscopy.” Growing awareness of the occupational hazards related to radiation exposure has been on the rise as evidenced by the increase in the number of scientific publications on these topics. The study summarizes the economic costs associated with common health consequences of chronic exposure to ionizing radiation, specifically the development of cancer and orthopedic injuries.
"This economic study draws attention to the alarming annual costs resulting from the adverse health effects associated with long-term exposure to interventional fluoroscopy in the United States,” said Michael Seymour MS, MPH, CIH, ORSIF Director of Advocacy Programs. "ORSIF is committed to raising awareness of the severity of radiation-related illnesses and conditions so that they, and their economic impact, are fully understood by the healthcare industry. Healthcare professionals devote their lives to improving patient care and saving lives but should not sacrifice their own health to do so."
Interventional procedures are performed in close proximity to radiation sources, which pose an ongoing and incremental health risk for employees. ORSIF, which was launched in April 2015, was created to raise awareness of the serious radiation and musculoskeletal hazards associated with working in interventional fluoroscopy laboratories, and generate awareness of and support for medical professionals and hospitals for new and better ways to create the safest work environment possible for those dedicated to the wellness of others. In addition to radiation illnesses, the organization is raising awareness for the serious orthopedic and musculoskeletal health issues facing doctors and staff, such as debilitating spinal conditions resulting from the use of the traditional lead-lined protective gear worn in fluoroscopy labs.
