GoFundMe Releases Annual "Year in Giving" Report

World’s largest social fundraising platform continues to expand as it becomes the destination for taking action in 2018

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--()--Today, GoFundMe released the annual Year in Giving report unveiling 2018 data, top fundraisers, trends and the most inspirational movements that took place on GoFundMe this year.

In a letter from GoFundMe CEO Rob Solomon, the report identifies three themes that prevailed on GoFundMe in 2018: single moments that turned into global movements; the next generation of activists leveraging technology for causes; and GoFundMe becoming the internet’s ‘take action’ button.

“Over the years, GoFundMe has become synonymous with helping others, and we saw this evolve to a new level in 2018, where GoFundMe became the ‘take action’ button for many,” says Solomon in the letter to the GoFundMe community. “Rather than being overwhelmed by the news, people instead started taking action with every event by sharing, donating, or even starting a GoFundMe to make an immediate impact.”

The GoFundMe giving community continues to expand with both new and repeat donors. While the platform has been around since 2010, GoFundMe continues to see new donors each year, with 61% of people who gave in 2018 being first-time donors. The platform also saw repeat donors returning to give to multiple causes, including one passionate donor who donated 141 times to 132 different fundraisers in this past year alone.

This year, GoFundMe continued to see their global community grow and respond to events both near and far. In April, after the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Canada that took the lives of 16 young hockey players, coaches, and staff, 141,984 individual donations from over 80 countries were made to the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Fund—the most donations to a single fundraiser in GoFundMe history. This year more than ever, people gave to both personal fundraisers as well as broader causes like the California wildfires, which raised nearly $30 million for over 9,000 fundraisers to help those impacted by the fires.

The report continues on to provide a snapshot of giving trends from the year by looking at global trends, data, inspiring personal stories and company milestones.

Highlights from GoFundMe’s 2018 Year in Giving report include:

  • Top fundraisers of 2018
  • Top 10 most generous U.S. cities
  • Top 10 most generous U.S. states
  • Fastest-growing fundraising categories
