TYSONS CORNER, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ernst & Young LLP (EY) announced that former FBI Executive Assistant Director Carl Ghattas has joined the firm as an Executive Director in the Government & Public Sector Advisory practice. Carl retired from the FBI after 21 years of service, culminating in his duties as the Executive Assistant Director (EAD) of the FBI’s National Security Branch from February 2017 to July 2018.
As the EAD of the National Security Branch, Ghattas led the FBI’s operations and intelligence efforts involving all national security matters, ranging from terrorism to espionage to weapons of mass destruction. Under his leadership, the program focused on technical innovation, operational agility and strategic partnerships.
Carl joined the FBI in 1997. Upon graduating from the FBI Academy, he worked counterterrorism investigations in the Washington Field Office. Carl deployed overseas to investigate several major attacks against the United States, including the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya; the 2000 attack against the U.S.S. Cole in Aden Yemen; and the murder of several Americans in Greece by the Greek terrorist group 17 November. Over the course of his 21-year career, the majority of Carl’s focus had been on counterterrorism efforts in the United States and around the world, as well as on the strategic integration of intelligence and operations to align intelligence collection with priority threats.
In 2014, he was appointed Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Office’s counterterrorism program. In 2016, he was appointed Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division.
Ghattas has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Service, the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service and the Exceptional Achievement Medal from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
“Carl’s experience in law enforcement and intelligence at all levels will be a tremendous asset in helping EY deliver targeted services in support of the Government’s current and emerging needs,” said Mike Herrinton, Partner, Ernst & Young LLP and US Government & Public Sector Leader.
“I was drawn to EY because of the firm’s commitment to a set of core values similar to those which framed my years of service in the FBI. I was also impressed by the high-performing teams EY consistently identifies to pursue its mission,” Carl said.
Carl earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University and a Juris Doctor from Washington University.
